Linear Composition

Angular vs. Curvilinear

Angular

"The Sabines" Jacque-Louis David 1794-99
David uses angularity to create a dynamic and aggressive scene. Diagonals denote action and movement, while horizontals can create a sense of rest. A strong vertical can denote stability and strength. Which way do the lines run in the above painting? Notice the predominance of diagonals in poses and weapons combined with the strength of verticles.

Angular bodies can denote masculinity, agression, harshness, energy, expressiveness, extrovert personality (Choleric/Sanguin), confidence, security, or modernity.

Curvilinear

It was once said by a wedding photographer that women should bend every place on their body that can be bent. The idea is that of the curvilinear: create soft, curving forms that lead the eye gently through the image in a relaxed pattern. Notice how Sir Laurens Alma-Tadema has used the curvilinear throughout these ladies' poses to create the relaxing scene at "the Baths at Caracalla." (1889) Curves are femenine, romantic, sentimental, passive, introspective, gentle, humble, and may denote an introverted personality (Phlegmatic, Melancholy)

To create a relaxed pose, make sure the hands are relaxed: the hands should never be clenched in a fist. Instead, make sure the hand is open and relaxed, the wrist and fingers bent. Fingers themselves give great opportunities for curved lines. Seperate the fingers in a relaxed pose and allow the wrist to bend.
