DEMONSTRATION
Completing the Color

The color is completed in the foreground by painting in the trellis and ivy, as well as the brick walkway and the girls' dresses.

Notice that the ivy is painted with more yellow than the background. Though they are not bright, the warmer colors and increased detail help bring the leaves forward of the trees in back. In a similar way, the high contrast of the dark, wet trellis wood pulls that form forward of the less contrasty background.

The brickwork was produced using various earthtones scumbled over the underpainting in two layers. [a scumble is an opaque or semi-opaque color which is thinly brushed over an underpainting, allowing patches of the color beneath to show through] When the bricks were dry, the grasses and moss growing between the bricks were painted in.
