Moving on to the broad massing of the shirt, Huihan picked up a cheap 2" bristle house painting brush and began quickly laying in the tones.
He often discussed not overblending the paint on the palette, as that would lead to flat looking color. Instead, he suggested simply touching the colors into one another, and letting the brush stroke reveal the mixture on the canvas, which adds vitality to the color.

Then, picking up his palette knife, he began laying in the cool lights of the shadow side of the figure, which were lit by north windows from above, the warm, light side being illuminated by incandescent light.

To reduce the hard edges created by the knife, a wide flat bristle was swept across the paint to integrate these lights into the composition, and to push the far side arm back into space.
