Here you can see a view of the model which is close to that observed by the artist, though slightly more in profile due to the position of the camera.
You can compare it to the painting below, as Huihan began to block in the areas of light on the face, keeping the shapes simple and without details at this point.
Areas of lightest lights are placed, in order to judge the other values as they are applied.
